UNITED WAYS DISCUSS MERGING
Are United Way of Greater Duluth and United Way of Superior—Douglas County merging?
Task force members representing both United Way of Superior - Douglas County (UWSDC) and United Way of Greater Duluth are actively discussing a merger. The topic isn't new. Board of Directors on both sides of the bridge have considered a merger many times over the years.
And now the timing is perfect. Kathi Madsen, Executive Director of UWSDC is planning to retire. "I'm excited about the endless possibilities two strong organizations can provide by joining forces," Madsen says.
Matt Hunter, the new president at UWGD has experience in nonprofit mergers. If the merger goes through, Kathi Madsen will continue working for a few months to help smooth the transition. Members of UWSDC will vote on the merger this month.
The two United Way offices are only five miles apart. Many people live in one community and work in another. Both have similar missions, to:
- Provide ways for people to give, advocate, and volunteer to build a better community;
- Help people in need access human services in the region; and
- Create awareness of critical unmet needs and the many agencies that provide direct services to residents in their region.
What are the benefits?
- Gain efficiency by aligning efforts. Examples of efficiencies include but are not limited to: merging staff, administration, marketing, campaign outreach, recruitment of business involvement, financials, procedures for applying for funding and allocations, grant writing, and board expertise.
- Strengthen connections between the communities where many share home and work; ·
- Grow the amount of money and services available to serve people in need; and ·
- Improve our ability to recognize and address regional needs and priorities.
Which community will my donation support?
Which ever community you choose! The merged organization will continue to champion the unique identities of its communities and will honor the requests of donors who want their gifts to remain local.

Little Blue Bookshelves
The Little Blue Bookshelf program will now be coordinated through The Lake Superior Literacy Council.
The Lake Superior Literacy Council held a painting party on April 2nd, the books were transferred from the shelves at the United Way offices to the group; additional bookshelves were built by the student carpenters at Superior High School.
Join them on April 23rd for a Family Literacy Night. They will be displaying the shelves filled with books from SHS FCCLA during the literacy night, and then donating them to our elementary schools that do not have a bookshelf.
