United Way - $5,000
Foster Grandparent volunteers serve 15-40 hours per week, tutoring and mentoring children with special or exceptional needs, helping to build their academic and social skills. In Douglas County, we have volunteer stations in Family Forum Head Start programs I and II, the YMCA daycare center, and all elementary schools in Superior and Solon Springs.
This United Way funding is ONLY invested in our Superior and Douglas County Foster Grandparents. Your contribution supports volunteer stipends, professional training on mentoring and tutoring skills, and two recognition events celebrating the impact on hundreds of children on Douglas County.
Last year we provided 25,777 hours of service to 931 children; 78% of whom have special needs that challenge ability to learn successfully. This number of children in need is an increase of 20% over the need identified by teachers during 2006. Area Supervisor Dina Maki makes monthly site visits to maintain communication, and observe and coach the volunteers’ tutoring and mentoring performance.
